Why Crowdfund?

Composting and waste reduction have become a core part of my life, and I’m grateful to be able to turn that commitment into something that benefits our local community. But South Hill Compost is about more than just composting for composting’s sake. Every year, enormous amounts of food waste end up in landfills, contributing to methane emissions, wasted resources, and the loss of valuable organic material that could be rebuilding soil right here at home.

Even in our rural corner of the Cortland County, the impact of waste is real. My mission with South Hill Compost is to keep organic material out of the landfill and return it to the soil—closing the loop locally and building something sustainable, practical, and community-driven.

For that reason, I work hard to keep composting education, basic information, and participation accessible. South Hill Compost is organized so that most people can get started easily, without barriers, and feel confident that their food scraps are being put to good use.

The only fees associated with South Hill Compost are for collection services and custom arrangements for households, businesses, and organizations that need regular pickups or higher-volume service. These customers receive reliable scheduling, direct communication, and a cost-effective way to reduce waste while supporting a local operation.

Pricing is intentionally kept affordable for households, small businesses, and low-budget organizations, breaking away from large-scale waste models that often price out the very people who want to do the right thing. More information on service options and discounts can be found here.

Reasons to Donate

South Hill Compost is built to be accessible—but running a real, working compost operation is not free.

Ongoing costs include containers, fuel, equipment maintenance, tools, site improvements, and infrastructure needed to properly process organic material at scale.

In addition, many hours each week go into collections, processing, site management, outreach, and education. Donations help cover these costs and make it possible to keep South Hill Compost operating, growing, and improving. Monthly donations are especially helpful, as they provide a steady and predictable source of support that allows for better planning and long-term investment.

Donation Policy

Donations are non-refundable. Both one-time and automatic monthly donation options are available. South Hill Compost is not currently organized as a non-profit organization; therefore, donations are not tax-deductible.

Donations can be made securely online or by mailing a check. If you prefer to donate by mail, please make the check payable to South Hill Compost and send it to:
